On the Mark, Episode 1: The Introduction

April 13, 2009

Hi Everybody,

This is a personal message from Mark.

Life's been kind of rough, and sometimes it seems like we are facing the end of civilization as we know it, but it's time to lighten things up. I've decided to do a quick little weekly email to my friends as a diversion from the "stuff" of everyday life.

Now most people would publish a blog, or do a twitter (or tweeter or a tooter, or whatever they call it), but I'm kind of old fashioned. So I'll use that ancient communication tool called e-mail.

I'll keep things short, just a couple of minutes every week. It might be a musing of mine, or it could be a video link to something that causes me to smile, snicker, laugh, think, or maybe cry. It might be on something that you have no interest in, but please indulge me and read, watch, or listen.

Everyone at heart is self indulgent, and so am I. Shoot, most of my friends are, and I just smile and let them, because that's the cool thing about friendship. Because along the way, I might learn something about them, which in turn means I might learn something about something else . . . or even learn something about myself.

Most of the things I've come to love or like, I learned about them because a friend or family member indulged me with their interests.

Which brings me to Episode 1 of "On The Mark"

Most of my episodes will be shorter than this one, but I had to do the proper introduction. Anyhow, the following 2:30 video is from a movie about one of my favorite pop groups. It's one of those groups that for a time people would laugh at you if you claimed to be a fan. You had to listen to their music under the cover of darkness, never letting their music be heard by any outsider for fear of certain mocking. But then, if you found another fan, you had an instant connection and you discovered another person who was as smart and you, lol.

This clip is from a video that I got from the library this weekend about this particular group. My kids happen to love this group as well, and it's a song that even I had never heard before. But after watching this over the weekend (which was much better on DVD on our widescreen TV), my girls and I have had the chorus of this song stuck in our heads. They even started imitating the motions of the singers.

So this song brought us joy this weekend, so please indulge me for 2:30 and sit back and enjoy it yourself:

. . . Now that was fun, wasn't it? I have a bonus clip of one of their very famous songs, and it will give you an extra spring in your step today. You need to take a chance and watch it:

That's it for episode one. Episode 2 next week will be about my favorite all-time church hymn. One that sends shivers down my back whenever sung at church (which they never seem to do anymore). I fear the song will be lost within a generation, and that would be a shame.

Feel free to share this email to anybody you want to. I'll even add people to my mailing list. If you want taken off, that will hurt my feelings, but oh well it wouldn't be the first time.

In the words of the immortal Porky Pig, "Th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, thats all folks!"

Thanks,

Mark
